Four Types of Lawyers You Should Never Hire
Finding the right lawyer can be a daunting task. How does one even know where to start? There are so many attorneys out there making promises and offering a wide variety of services. Many people looking to hire a lawyer have little experience with the legal system and may not even know what kind of questions to ask or how to know if a lawyer is right for their case. Here, we make the search a little easier by sharing our tips on the four types of lawyer to never hire. The lawyers in these categories likely cannot fulfill the promises they make or may be ill-equipped to deal with your legal situation. Keep these helpful tips in mind when searching for legal representation. Avoid lawyers who:
1. Ask for money right away. Although there are many different types of fee arrangements that are appropriate, an attorney should not be immediately demanding a large sum of money. In most personal injury cases, the lawyer is paid directly from the settlement. This means that he doesn’t get paid until your case is resolved and compensation is awarded.
2. Have never handled your type of case before. Like in many professions, most lawyers have areas of specialization. Laws are complex and vary from location to location. It is important to retain a lawyer who understands the details of the law in both the town and the practice area of your case. Facing unfamiliar legal specialties, an attorney may not have the knowledge or experience to offer thorough representation.
3. Guarantee a specific outcome. No lawyer can make any guarantees when it comes to legal cases. New information pops up, circumstances change, or any number of surprise events can occur. It is impossible to know exactly how a judge or jury will rule. An attorney who makes promises he cannot keep gives clients false hope, a practice that is both unkind and unethical.
4. Give you a bad gut feeling. If you don’t have a good rapport with your lawyer at your initial meeting, you are typically under no obligation to continue to work with him. Don’t hire someone you don’t trust.
While it may feel overwhelming, finding the right attorney is possible. Even if a past case was mishandled, finding a new lawyer with the right skill set and experience can help mitigate or even reverse negative outcomes.
